Compost Works for Agriculture

How it works:

Compost is a soil amendment with a very long history and there is a good reason for that - it works.

Compost provides essential microbiology to the soil while also providing the habitat and food to establish a foothold. Compost feeds the living soil and improves its structure and water holding capability. Healthy soil, in turn, feeds the crops that feed you.

Just a few benefits of compost include:

  • Soil structure (water holding capacity, reduction of nutrient leaching) -- carbon, organic matter, humus

  • Biology (converts nutrients into plant available food, strengthens plants defenses, increases organic matter) -- multi species of beneficial fungus (including mycorrhizae), bacteria, actinomycetes, and other microbiology

  • Nutrients-- NPK, calcium, boron, sulfur, magnesium, manganese, humic acids and more.  Compost is controlled decay of plants- so it has everything in it that plants are made of and need.

Multiple studies have shown that compost can suppress certain fungal borne soil diseases. The theory is that beneficial microbiology outcompetes the detrimental microbiology as well as strengthens the plants’ defenses.
